Design + Sew + Create
Moyra Jones is the creative talent behind the labels: Surface Art, Essaye and Theadora Jones.
The three labels share a common “thread” – it’s all about the fabric.
Moyra studied fabric design and printing at the Scottish College of Textiles and started her first business, Tessuti, in Edinburgh when she was fresh out of college.
Tessuti is Italian for fabrics, and Moyra’s love of textiles has never faded.
Today, she operates out of a cute studio-shop in inner west Sydney, taking inspiration from the nature and objects around her and the artistic movements that have blossomed throughout the decades: William Morris, Orientalism, mid-Century abstraction, bold 1970s design …
Moyra’s designs and products all bear her individual style and clever use of colour.
Moyra designs statement prints for the homewares and fabric label, Surface Art. Since Moyra launched the label at Paddington Markets in Sydney it has garnered a loyal clientele of interior designers, DIY decorators, and lovers of good design.
When Moyra discovered that people wanted to wear her fabric and not just scatter it as cushions on a couch, she introduced the Essaye clothing label. Essaye is about simple designs that are clever with colour and form.
The A-line skirt and cotton drill tunic are the mainstays of the Essaye range. Every season Moyra creates new designs and colourways for these much loved staples, plus some clever new shapes that showcase her prints.
Essaye also sells seasonal tees in plains and prints, and other wardrobe essentials.
There is a whole world out there of amazing fabric and Moyra has an eye for a beautiful print. For Theadora Jones, Moyra finds fabrics that she likes and sews them into simple easy-to-wear garments. All Theadora Jones products are limited edition; Moyra buys a length of a favourite print and when it’s gone it’s gone. With Theadora Jones you have a simple range of clothing that is constantly changing.
Moyra works with a trusted crew of printers, makers and couriers. She always aims to employ local talent and to offer Australian-made products.
In the interest of the environment, fabrics are printed with water-based inks and the quality clothing and homewares are made to last.
