Meet the Maker: Moyra Jones

I'm Moyra Jones, the founder and creative heart of Surface Art Studio. My story begins in Scotland, where a passion for textile design took root. In the 90s I packed up and moved to Sydney and soon found myself working alongside the iconic Australian artist Ken Done, translating his vibrant, sun-drenched imagery into fabrics for fashion and accessories.

My Story

In 2000, I launched Surface Art by doing local markets, selling handmade cushions and fabric by the metre. Over the years, that small beginning has developed into an Australian brand, known for bold prints, timeless clothing, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable values.

Design Philosophy: Nature, Art and Pattern

For me, fabric is a celebration of the visual world. I draw from nature and from the design movements I have always loved, from mid-century abstraction and Scandinavian minimalism to 1950s interiors and 1970s graphics. Every Surface Art print tells a story, whether through a daring scale, a clever repeat, or an unexpected colourway. Our signature style is unmistakable. I design with longevity in mind, creating textiles and garments that feel fresh, expressive, and wearable year after year.

From Fabric to Fashion: The Evolution of My Labels

Customer feedback has always been important. In the early days, people loved the fabrics but wanted to wear them. So, I listened and began crafting simple A-line skirts and tunic dresses to bring the prints to life. Those easy-to-wear styles became popular and paved the way for Essaye, my dedicated clothing label. Named after the initials of Surface Art, Essaye is not about fleeting trends. It is about well-made, versatile clothing designed to last. I release two collections a year, mixing new designs with perennial favourites like the Mikko range, A-line skirts and tops available year-round in refreshed colourways.

Theadora Jones is my limited-edition label, named in honour of my mother, who first inspired my love of sewing. It was born from customers admiring the dresses I made for myself and grew into something truly special. This label offers garments, homewares, and fabrics made from small-batch textiles I personally select. Once these fabrics are gone, they are gone forever, making every piece truly one of a kind.

Ethical and Local

I am proud that 90% of my products are made locally, within 5km of my Inner West Sydney studio. As the business has grown, I have stayed hands-on with design and quality control, working alongside trusted local makers who share my values. To expand our creative possibilities, I also offer digitally printed textiles, produced through a small, ethically run business in China that specialises in short runs and adheres to strict labour and safety standards. My values extend to every part of my supply chain.
